Klingon K-Pop was one of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds musical's best jokes, and Anson Mount explains how it won out over Klingon opera.

Klingon K-Pop was chosen over opera for the musical episode. Executives initially wanted opera, but the cast argued that Klingons being embarrassed by opera wouldn't make sense.
The studio needed convincing that the boy band idea worked. Two different versions of the scene were shot, but the boy band concept was ultimately approved by showing that the other version didn't work as well.
Bruce Horak, who played General Garkog in the musical episode, was initially part of the main cast as Lt. Hemmer. His character was meant to die, but he became a fan-favorite. He returned as Hemmer in season 2 and also appeared as General Garkog.
